Dear prospective guest,
On behalf of The Center for Post Traumatic Growth and The Mendonsa Media, you are cordially invited to: ‘Moral Injury in People of Service’ www.moralinjury-ottawa.ca
This event will take place on December 12th, 2024, 4 PM, at the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology.
https://ingeniumcanada.org/scitech/visit#location
The event will consist of a viewing of the documentary titled ‘Sacred Texts of War’ depicting the twenty-five-year journey of a Mental Health Professional, Dr. Melinda Keenan, a Clinical Psychologist who founded the ‘Centre for Post Traumatic Growth’ (https://centerptg.org), and has offered her entire career to the development of treatment for Moral Injury in People of Service.
The treatment has been successfully offered to over ten thousand community members, whose commonalities include: careers in the ‘Helping Capacity’ as well as recognized to have suffered with ‘Moral Injury’.
The viewing of the documentary is followed by a guided conversation, with an opportunity to ask questions regarding the treatment itself and its applicability to your field of work. The presenters include Dr. Melinda Keenan, Moral Injury subject matter expert; Cristina Mendonsa, an award-winning journalist and the producer of ‘Sacred Texts of War’; along with a number of local community members invested in creating access to proper treatment for those who suffer with Moral Injury.
We are honoured to acknowledge Retired Assistant Commissioner RCMP Ches Parsons as the Event’s Keynote Speaker.
‘Moral Injury’ can leave its sufferer plagued with depression, anxiety, loss of relationships and various forms of self-harm. There is a recognized correlation between untreated ‘Moral Injury’ and suicide; approximately 8,030 veterans die by suicide every year in the United States . ‘Suicide in Canadian Veterans is a top public health concern for Veterans Affairs Canada’.
‘Moral Injury’ crosses various designations and is strongly associated with helping professions, including: military, policing, firefighting, paramedical, nursing, mental health, customs and immigration, correctional services, public transportation, and professions associated with working with those afflicted by homelessness, addictions, violence, conflict, trauma and loss.
“Moral Injury is something that happens frequently to people of service who choose professions that repeatedly expose them to the evil and suffering in the world. It is the most competent, compassionate and principled people that are the most vulnerable to these kinds of wounds: that which makes you excel is also your vulnerability”.
